Tooth Extraction
While wisdom teeth removal is known for being a fairly common procedure, there are multiple reasons why teeth in other areas of the mouth may need to be extracted. Tooth extraction is usually the last resort when a tooth is damaged or decayed to the point that it is risking oral health (or even general health) and no other treatment option is capable of saving it.
Our surgical and cosmetic dentists are skilled at identifying when a tooth may need to be extracted and can utilize advanced techniques for the most successful and comfortable treatment possible. By removing a problem tooth and exploring options for replacement, our dental team can help patients begin the process of restoring their oral health.

What Are the Most Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction?
In many cases, root canal therapy and dental crowns can help save a tooth suffering from structural damage and decay; however, sometimes tooth conditions have deteriorated to a point where removal is necessary. Common issues where extraction may be recommended include:
- Tooth damage caused by an injury
- Severe cracks or chips
- Significant tooth decay that cannot be successfully addressed by a filling
- The affected tooth is crowding other teeth to an extreme degree
- Loose teeth caused by gum disease
Once a tooth has been extracted, there are treatments available to fill the missing space in your smile, such as dental implants and dental bridges. Our dentist can discuss your options and answer any questions you may have during the initial consultation.
How Is Tooth Extraction Performed?
The tooth extraction process is customized to address a patient’s specific needs. Teeth that are above the gumline may not require surgery, whereas teeth that have not erupted through the gum may need oral surgery to extract the tooth. Patients often only need a local anesthetic for a tooth extraction procedure; however, for those who suffer from significant levels of dental anxiety, sedation dentistry techniques can often be utilized.
Some patients may require a small number of stitches following their tooth extraction to help facilitate a safe healing process. In those cases, the stitches are often removed approximately one week later.
Should I Have My Wisdom Teeth Removed?
Whether a patient requires wisdom teeth removal depends upon the circumstances of each case. For some individuals, their wisdom teeth are not crowding the adjacent teeth and are not causing discomfort. For other patients, there is simply not enough room in their mouth for the wisdom teeth. Additionally, the wisdom teeth may be causing symptoms such as pain, pressure, swollen and/or bleeding gums, bad breath, and/or shifting of surrounding teeth. In those cases, and in some cases where the developing wisdom teeth are shown to potentially cause those symptoms in the future, it may be advised that they be taken out.
How Much Does Tooth Extraction Cost?
At our practice, the cost of tooth extraction typically ranges from approximately $100 to $250. Oftentimes, the cost will depend on a variety of factors, including the number of teeth that need to be removed and where the tooth is located in the mouth. Once your custom treatment plan has been developed, our team will provide you with a personalized cost and detailed price breakdown.
